Anytime I shoot on a family farm I have to restrain myself from shooting the entire session in pure black & white. There’s something about a portrait of a farming family that is so salt-of-the-earth and so real that it just lends itself to that look, like your peeling back the unnecessary layers of exterior sheathing to get to the center of it all, the why. The Groski family didn’t shift that dynamic. I loved it, we played around with the goats, almost got attacked by chickens, found some fresh eggs and finished on the four-wheeler. It was great night, it was what I hope for when I’m asked to photograph a family.
